Canon Introduces New RF-S “S-L” Lens Series: Professional Optical Performance in a Smaller, Lighter System
Canon expands its vision of professional photography with an all-new family of premium APS-C lenses designed for creators who demand mobility without compromise.
MELVILLE, NY – May 28, 2026 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced one of the most significant expansions of the EOS R System since its introduction: the new Canon S-L Series for the RF-S mount, a professional line of lenses engineered specifically for APS-C RF mount cameras.
For decades, Canon’s iconic L-series lenses have represented the gold standard in professional photography and filmmaking. Today, Canon introduces a second professional path.
The new S-L series delivers the same philosophy of premium optical performance, weather resistance, durability, and operational precision that photographers expect from Canon’s legendary L-series lenses — but in a dramatically smaller and lighter form factor optimized for APS-C cameras.
The result is a system designed for creators who need uncompromising image quality while traveling lighter and moving faster.
“Photographers have told us for years that they wanted professional APS-C lenses without compromise,” said Hiroshi Tanaka, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Canon Imaging Technologies. “The S-L series represents Canon’s answer. These lenses are designed for professionals and enthusiasts who value mobility as much as image quality. Whether you are climbing a mountain, navigating a crowded city, or covering breaking news, the S-L series delivers professional performance in a compact system.”
A New Era for Professional APS-C Photography
The launch of the S-L line signals a major strategic evolution for Canon.
Historically, photographers seeking Canon’s highest-performing optics were directed toward full-frame L-series lenses. While many APS-C users adopted those lenses, the overall system size and weight often reduced the portability advantages of smaller camera bodies.
The new S-L series changes that equation entirely.
Designed from the ground up for APS-C image sensors, S-L lenses provide:
- Professional-grade optical quality
- Advanced weather sealing
- Fast, responsive autofocus
- Premium build materials
- Reduced size and weight
- Optimized balance on RF-S camera bodies
Canon says the new series is aimed directly at travel photographers, documentary shooters, photojournalists, outdoor creators, hybrid video professionals, and anyone who spends long days carrying their equipment.
“With S-L, photographers no longer have to choose between professional performance and portability,” Tanaka added. “Now, two professional systems exist within Canon.”
Introducing the First Three S-L Lenses
The S-L series launches with three flagship lenses covering ultra-wide, standard zoom, and telephoto needs.
Canon RF-S 10-24mm f/4 S-L IS USM
Equivalent to approximately 16-38mm on full-frame, this compact ultra-wide zoom is designed for travel, architecture, landscapes, and documentary storytelling.
Key features include:
- Constant f/4 aperture
- Optical Image Stabilization
- Nano USM autofocus
- Weather-resistant construction
- Fluorine-coated front element
- Internal stabilization coordination with compatible EOS R cameras
Canon claims the lens delivers edge-to-edge sharpness comparable to its acclaimed RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM, while weighing nearly 35% less.
Canon RF-S 16-50mm f/2.8 S-L IS USM
Designed as the everyday professional workhorse of the system, the RF-S 16-50mm f/2.8 S-L IS USM provides a full-frame equivalent field of view of approximately 24-75mm.
Canon describes the lens as ideal for:
- Photojournalism
- Weddings
- Street photography
- Documentary filmmaking
- General travel
The lens features:
- Constant f/2.8 aperture
- Advanced aspherical and UD optics
- Near-silent autofocus
- Enhanced video breathing suppression
- Professional weather sealing
Despite its bright aperture, Canon says the lens remains significantly smaller than comparable full-frame alternatives.
Canon RF-S 50-135mm f/4 S-L IS USM
Equivalent to approximately 80-216mm, this telephoto zoom is intended for wildlife, portraiture, sports, and compressed landscape work.
Highlights include:
- Constant f/4 aperture
- High-performance image stabilization
- Dual Nano USM motors
- Magnesium alloy construction
- Dust and moisture resistance
- Internal zoom design
Canon states the lens was specifically engineered for professionals who spend entire days carrying equipment in the field.
Built for the Next Generation of EOS R APS-C Cameras
Canon confirmed that the S-L series is part of a broader long-term commitment to the APS-C EOS R ecosystem.
Industry analysts have long speculated that Canon would eventually create a dedicated premium APS-C lens lineup capable of meeting professional quality expectations. The S-L launch now positions Canon more aggressively against high-end APS-C and Micro Four Thirds systems favored by travel and outdoor photographers.
The company also hinted that additional S-L lenses are already in development, including fast primes and super-telephoto options.
Availability
The Canon RF-S S-L series lenses are expected to begin shipping in early 2027 through authorized Canon dealers worldwide.
Additional pricing and technical specifications will be announced closer to launch.
